Unfortunately Finale doesn't let you save in a backward compatible format, so if you try to distribute a 2003 Notepad file to someone iwth 2002 full, they won't be able to read it. You can edit and save in all formats (again, you are limited to the features/functionality within the version you have) and save them.

Notepad is good for if you don't want to spend $$$ and want a portable format, but again it's really lean on the features, so it can be frustrating, though I know a lot of people who get by with it and do well.

Print Music does a lot, but doesn't do everything that the Full version does, and I generally get frustrated with PrintMusic when trying to put togehter comprehensive arrangements. We email the arrangements out to the band and people can read them in Finale Notepad if they don't have one of the other versions.įinale basically removes functionality to offer cheaper SKU's. Those that arrange generally do so in the full version, but we've had some arrangements done in PrintMusic. Is there a catch? Is it crippled in any way?Īnybody tried it for printing out lead sheets (melody + chord symbols). My band uses Finale (we had to standardize on something). If I was doing a big ensemble or anything orchestral, I would pony up for Sibelius. So it's working out pretty well, though I get offended at the interface sometimes. I make up the scores and the hornplayers can view the score at home, and playing along with their soundcards before they even attend a rehearsal. At this point I am only scoring horns and vocals (5-10 staffs) in a pop/gospel context. With Sibelius there is a plug-in calles scorch and I had some problems with the scorch option sometimes.ĭespite that, I went with print music because it was cheap, I was at guitar center and they had it on sale. If you wanted to send a score to someone with finale they can download a free stripped down application. There was on respect in which I preferred finale's approach. Also, it appeared that Sibelius was more a serious composer's (and film scoring) tool and Finale seemed to have more of an existing installed base in schools. But it's been about a year.Īt the time it seemed that Sibelius was deeper, had better help/tutorial material, a less cludgy interface, and smoother scanning & web publishing options. I demoed both finale and sibelius with friends who own/have them.

I had a Mac, and when I switched to PC, I bought Encore, and Master Tracks Pro was free with it, I really liked that program.I use a stripped down version of Finale called print music. Actually, it looks the the stuff that you buy in a sheet music store.Īl Chuck, my first computer Sequencer was master tracks pro, great stuff. It's a bit quirky in the layout, and is more geared towards pianists ( or people who are playing a keyboard as opposed to using the mouse), but it looks killa.
